This is on Strathmore 300, with pencils anywhere from a 3B to a 9B. I usually start out with a 3B to block things in, then go from there. This isn’t a dead-on likeness with the image in the book, but I decided from the start that this was a shading and lighting exercise, not a likeness exercise.
Of course, you need to be able to replicate a reference image accurately, and feature by feature I think I have. It’s most likely a bit of a proportion problem, but I’m not going to jump off a bridge about it. Just learn from it.
I have purposely gone way further in rendering this and my other HEADS studies than I would in a composite drawing. But that’s why they’re called studies!
