Mugshot Sketch Number One

This is a drawing I did about 2 years ago, when I sat down and decided to copy an old mugshot, and not care a bit how it turned out. I didn’t measure anything, I didn’t concern myself if I was copying exactly…I just wanted to have fun. And I did!

This was also a bit scary to start, because he is at a very, very slight three-quarter view. Normally all composites are done completely from the front view, but that wasn’t the goal of my exercise in this…I just wanted to draw something that day.

I love this man’s face. Love his expression. Love the hat! And I love how the black and white photography from the 30′s is so clean and crisp.

Anyway, this drawing was done on Strathmore 300 recycled paper (my favorite paper but I’m still experimenting) with pencils anywhere from 3B to 9B. I didn’t keep track when I was drawing, again, because I just wanted to have fun!
